Domain Transfer

The process of moving a domain registration from one registrar to another.

Domain transfer is the process of moving your domain from one registrar (like GoDaddy) to another (like Namecheap). The domain itself doesn't change—only who manages it.

Why Transfer:

  • Better pricing
  • Better features or interface
  • Consolidating domains
  • Escaping poor customer service
  • Company acquisition

Transfer Requirements:

  • Domain must be 60+ days old
  • Not transferred in last 60 days
  • Not expiring within 30 days
  • Domain must be unlocked
  • Must have authorization (EPP) code

Transfer Process:

  1. Unlock domain at current registrar
  2. Get authorization/EPP code
  3. Initiate transfer at new registrar
  4. Enter authorization code
  5. Approve transfer via email
  6. Wait 5-7 days for completion

What Transfers Include:

  • Registration moved to new registrar
  • Typically adds 1 year to registration
  • DNS settings may or may not transfer

What Doesn't Change:

  • Your domain name
  • Existing nameserver settings
  • Website or email (if configured correctly)

Why It Matters

Understanding transfers helps you confidently move domains when needed without risking downtime or losing your domain. It's a normal part of domain management.

Practical Example

GoDaddy's renewal price jumped to $20/year. You unlock your domain, get the EPP code, and initiate a transfer to Namecheap for $8.88. A week later, your domain is at Namecheap with an extra year added.
